Abstract:Neuropathic pain remains prevalent in HIV+ individuals despite the availability of better-tolerated combination antiretroviral therapy (CART) regimens that suppress viral replication and foster immune recovery. Concurrent risk factors for distal neuropathic pain (DNP). Nevertheless, DNP can emerge even among individuals who were previously pain free (Evans S et al. CROI 2009; abstract 462). We evaluated risk factors for developing DNP among previously pain-free HIV+ individuals in an observational cohort study. Potential risk factors for incident DNP were selected based on prior reports of associations with concurrent DNP including low CD4 nadir, increasing age, prior neurotoxic d-drug exposure and major depressive disorder.
