Abstract:"Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is associated with the development of abnormal white matter signal (AbWM) on structural MRI images. However, the relationship between AbWM signal and underlying fiber integrity is not well understood. In this study we used multi-spectral structural imaging and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to examine the relationship between anatomical change and white matter microstructure, as represented by fractional anisotropy (FA), among a sample of HIV+ individuals. We hypothesized that the overall level of AbWM and level of disease severity would both be significant predictors of FA, independent of age.
