Abstract:"The current study examined the relationship between HIV-associated prospective memory (ProM) impairment and dependence in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). HIV-infected individuals classified as IADL dependent (n = 26) demonstrated impaired ProM relative to IADL independent individuals (n = 40) with comparable demographic, HIV disease, and psychiatric histories. The profile of ProM deficits in the IADL dependent group reflected impaired cue detection and self-initiated intention retrieval. Importantly, ProM was a significant independent predictor of IADL status versus measures of retrospective memory and acute affective distress. These data support the ecological validity of HIV-associated ProM impairment as a useful predictor of daily functioning.
