Abstract:"Background: Rates of HIV are elevated in bipolar disorder (BD), but medication adherence is understudied in this vulnerable population. We examined problems with adherence in HIV+ persons with lifetime bipolar disorder (HIV+/BD) using as a comparison condition of another prevalent mood disorder, lifetime major depression (HIV+/MDD). Because psychotropic drugs (e.g., antidepressants, mood stabilizers) are important aspects of treatment, we examined adherence to both antiretrovirals and psychotropics. Differences in problems between groups or drug classes might suggest a need for tailored interventions.
