Publication Abstract Display | Type: Published Abstract | Title: Poor medication adherence among HIV-infected individuals with co-occurring Bipolar Disorder is associated with worse HIV disease. | Authors: Moore DJ, Poquette A, Posada C, Parikh M, Arce M, Vaida F, Riggs K, Gouaux B, Ellis R, Letendre S, Grant I, Atkinson JH, and the HNRP Group | Year: 2011 | Publication: 6th International Conference on HIV Treatment and Prevention Adherence, Miami, Florida, 05-22-2011 | Volume: Issue: Pages: | Abstract:Conclusions:
1. HIV+/BD+ had significantly worse ART medication adherence than a demographically comparable group of HIV+/BD- participants
2. HIV+/BD+ persons who showed Worsened VL had extremely poor adherence rates, suggesting adherence may be the cause of worsening virologic control
3. The two HIV+/BD- individuals who had worsened virologic control still showed good ART adherence, possibly suggesting treatment resistance virus
4. HIV+/BD+ persons with the worst adherence evidenced the worst HIV disease outcomes
5. Identifying specialized interventions to improve adherence in this subpopulation is a public health priority as worse HIV disease coupled with high levels of risk behavior may lead to increased HIV transmission. |
