Publication Abstract Display | Type: Poster | Title: The relationship between neurocognitive functioning and
employment in HIV seropositive women in India. | Authors: Grullon ET, Ghate M, Meyer RA, Hendrix T, Heaton RK, Letendre S, Grant I, Mehendale S, Marcotte TD, and the HNRC Group | Date: 02-06-2013 | Abstract:In this sample, HIV+ women in India were more likely to be unemployed,
irrespective of previous employment history.
HIV+ individuals with no employment history had higher impairment
rates, despite similar educational levels, suggesting a possible cognitive
reserve effect for factors not captured by education alone, or that
employed individuals utilize or develop skills on the job that may
improve their performance on NP tests.
Lower NP scores, especially in the domains of processing speed and
executive functioning, may be associated with a greater likelihood of
incident unemployment.
Limitations include the small sample size and restriction to individuals
with advanced disease.
Future studies should address whether treatments (e.g., initiation of antiretroviral
medication, cognitive remediation) might improve the
participant’s cognitive status and result in improved vocational
functioning. |
