Abstract:"Chronic alcoholism is often accompanied by abuse of CNS stimulants, including cocaine and amphetamines. There is well-documented evidence for brain recovery with long-term abstinence in individuals with a significant history of alcohol dependence, but recovery in alcoholic individuals with comorbid stimulant use histories is uncertain. Stimulant abuse can lead to cerebrovascular abnormalities, and we hypothesize that there may be persisting deficits in brain function due to these abnormalities in long-term abstinent alcoholic individuals with histories of stimulant abuse.
