Publication Abstract Display | Type: Published Abstract | Title: Mild HIV-related cognitive impairment is associated with reduced performance on a driving simulator. | Authors: Marcotte TD, Heaton RK, Alhassoon O, Taylor MJ, Arfaa J, Grant I, and the HNRC Group | Year: 1997 | Publication: Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society | Volume: 3 Issue: 1 Pages: 14 | Abstract:HIV infection often results in neuropsychological (NP) impairment. However,
there has been little research on the effect that these deficits may
have on driving abilities. Sixty-nine HIV seropositive subjects completed
an NP battery and two PC-based driving simulations. Thirty-two subjects
were classified as NP impaired; the majority evidenced only mild impairment.
NP impaired subjects failed a previously validated simulation at a
much higher rate than NP intact subjects. On a simulation of city driving,
NP impaired subjects had significantly more accidents than the intact group.
Although it would be premature to extrapolate these findings to impairment
in on-the-road driving, they do argue for greater attention to the impact
that subtle HIV-related NP deficits may have on driving skills. |
