Abstract:Efficiency in mental processing is believed to be affected in HIV-infected individuals. Fourteen HIV+ men diagnosed with Minor Cognitive/ Motor Disorder (MCMD), 32 HIV+ men without MCMD and 13 HIV- controls were compared on a variation of the Sternberg speed of memory scanning task. The groups did not differ significantly in age, education, or level of depression. In addition, the two HIV+ groups did not differ significantly in level of illness. The results indicated that the MCMD group displayed significantly poorer processing efficiency and slower motor response compared to both non-MCMD groups.
