Abstract:The objective of this paper is to examine the various methodologies of assessing driving behavior in potentially impaired populations. The paper will first review clinic based performance measures, such as neuropsychological and attention/perceptual tests that have attempted to predict driving performance in clinical populations. Then the focus will be on the various approaches to driving assessments, such as on-road assessments, review of driving history, and simulator assessments, and their relative strengths and limitations. The final section will briefly address the development of the driving assessment laboratory at the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center at the University of California, San Diego.
