Abstract:"Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is associated with cognitive dysfunction, but the underlying neuropathogenic role of white matter fiber change is not well understood. In this study we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to characterize the relationship between white matter fiber structure and neuropsychological (NP) functioning among a sample of HIV+ individuals. We hypothesized that poorer NP performance would be related to lower fractional anisotropy (FA), a scalar measure related to the underlying white matter microstructural integrity.
