Abstract:"Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) research has shown disruption of neuronal and membrane integrity in frontal (FWM) and posterior white matter (PWM) of alcoholics. However, the microstructural correlates of these changes have not been described. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of alcoholism on white matter integrity using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and MRS. We hypothesized: 1) elevated apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC); 2) lower fractional anisotropy (FA); 3) lower N-acetylaspartate (NAA); and 4) lower choline in alcoholics compared to controls. More importantly, higher ADC and lower FA were predicted to relate to lower NAA and choline in alcoholics. |
