Abstract:"Background: Single voxel magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) measurements of N-acetyl aspartate, choline, and creatine are affected in HIV neurocognitively impaired patients. However, these metabolic markers are often normalized in affected central nervous system (CNS) regions, such as the lenticular nuclei, after initiation of HAART. We hypothesize that lactate, a marker of inflammation and anaerobic glycolysis, and lipid, an indicator of cell membrane turnover due to oxidative stress, could serve as surrogate biomarkers of disease progression within the lenticular nuclei of HIV+ patients.
