Abstract:Introduction: Research has demonstrated that HIV infection is associated with poorer general and health-related QoL, especially in persons with advanced disease (e.g., Bing et al., 2000) and psychiatric comorbidities (e.g., depression; Trepanier et al., 2005). Neurocognitive deficits, which are highly prevalent in HIV infection (e.g., Heaton et al., 1995; Reger et al., 2002), are also an important risk factor for diminished QoL (e.g., Tozzi et al., 2004). In particular, research shows that HIV-associated deficits in episodic memory are implicated in reduced QoL (e.g., Tozzi et al., 2003). However, despite this published literature suggesting an association between deficits on performance-based tests of memory and self-reported QoL in HIV, we are unaware of any studies in which participants are directly asked about the relationship between their perceived memory impairments and QoL. This study therefore sought to examine the reliability and validity of a novel measure of memory-related QoL (i.e., Survey of Memory-Related Quality of Life; SMRQoL).
