Abstract:Antiretroviral non-adherence is significantly associated with a mixed encoding/retrieval profile of verbal episodic memory deficits, which is broadly consistent with the modal memory profile of HIV. Learning and free recall of lists and passage with intact retention and recognition. This is consistent with prior studies showing that story memory is sensitive to HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders. More modest, trend-level effects were observed on list learning. The stronger association between non-adherence and story recall versus list learning was surprising and may reflect the importance of contextual features when remembering to take medications (e.g., importance of environmental cues). Targeted interventions to enhance initial understanding and acquisition of medication regimen information and structured dosing schedules may, therefore, enhance cART adherence and improve overall health outcomes among individuals living with HIV.
