Abstract:This study supports the feasibility of implementing an emotional list- learning task, showing that emotionally laden information is encoded and recalled differently as compared to neutral information. In contrast to literature reports, negatively-laden information is less well encoded and recalled as compared to positively-laden or neutral information. The contrasting finding may be due to the different methodologies (i.e., list learning, faces, narratives) Consistent with several reports in the literature (e.g., LaBar & Phelps, 1998), women learn and recall more emotionally laden words, and specifically more positively-laden words. Future work will use the EVLT among persons with mood disorders and will compare EVLT performance with traditional verbal list learning tests.
