Abstract:Results revealed medium-to-large effects of HAND across Sørensen’s (2012) functional levels of health literacy, and suggest that individuals with HAND evidence lower health literacy across some, but not all domains. HAND was associated with deficits within both lower- (e.g., understanding) and higher-order (e.g., appraisal/application) functional domains of health literacy. However, levels of health motivation did not differ between groups. Within the HAND+ group, poor health literacy was largely related to deficits in learning and executive function, which may serve as appropriate targets for health literacy intervention. Future studies examining the health and everyday functioning impact of deficits in the various functional levels of health literacy in HIV may also be warranted.
