Abstract:HIV infection often results in neuropsychological (NP) impairment. However, there has been little research on the effect that these deficits may have on driving abilities. Sixty-nine HIV seropositive subjects completed an NP battery and two PC-based driving simulations. Thirty-two subjects were classified as NP impaired; the majority evidenced only mild impairment. NP impaired subjects failed a previously validated simulation at a much higher rate than NP intact subjects. On a simulation of city driving, NP impaired subjects had significantly more accidents than the intact group. Although it would be premature to extrapolate these findings to impairment in on-the-road driving, they do argue for greater attention to the impact that subtle HIV-related NP deficits may have on driving skills.
