Abstract:"Dementia (impairment in two or more cognitive areas sufficiently sever to interfere with life functioning), is a recognized complication of infection by human immunity deficiency virus type I (HIV-1). HIV associated dementia (HAD) tends to occur principally in persons with advanced infection (AIDS), with prevalence estimates from <10% to >66% among those with AIDS (8, 10). Earlier we reported 14% annual incidence of HAD in patients with ARC/AIDS not previously treated with zidovudine (AZT) (1). |
